THE PERFECT 180SX: Wakamatsu’s “Nikko Special”
April 27, 2009 1:25 amYeah, I said it. This is the perfect 180SX. Anything else beyond this point is just showing off.
Owned and driven by Auto Garage Amigo’s Yasushi Wakamatsu, member of the legendary Marionette drift team, this “Nikko Special” 180SX has everything you need, and nothing you don’t.
Of course, it helps if you’re an old-school D1 driver with years of experience under your belt, but I’ve seen very few cars drive as neatly and strongly as this one.
Linking the back straight at Nikko while lifting a wheel on each transition and making a whole lot of smoke is easy for Wakamatsu.
Just a simple Skyline brake conversion with Fujino Bankin knuckles.
Full interior, no stereo, cup holders and loud red bucket seat.
The engine is a Tomei 2.2L SR20 with a Tomei Arms BB turbo. The transmission is an R33 five-speed filled with OS Giken 1-2-3 close ratio gears, attached by a Racing Emotion R custom bellhousing. The prop shaft is a cut-and-shut, and the diff is a 4.6 ratio.
It helps if you have this guy behind the wheel too.

*allllmost* perfect (don’t shoot me!)
the canards don’t need to be there
Well, maybe not THE best 180sx, but at least, it would be in my top 5 ever ! I like this kind of post about every day life at circuit ! Keep it up !
Amazing Car!
agree with slug.
Each to their own, but i find the “less is more” approach very refreshing.
is this your perfect 180SX? because it does look alot like your old 180 alexi
Its cool and all, but Wakamatsu’s red Kouki 180SX from 2001/2002 was alot sweeter. Him and Itai twinning at Nikko was maaaaazing!
sory, but im not a fan of it, its a dedicated track car, but it could look nicer, so i dont agree with the title.
HEY MAN. HEYYYYYY MAN listen here.
the RED CAR was the perfect car. Where is it?
I know you must hold the keys to that answer.
He speaks good English.
bravo. cool dude. I would go to D1 again if he came to USA, but I doubt he will ever return here.
bummer
not pretty enough
excellent!
Yeah without the Canards would be good!
What headlights are they?
I love this color blue. Do you have anymore pictures?
Needs to lose the canards and ad a kouki spoiler.
Hey, it should be full interior, no stereo, no steering wheel, cup holders… Haha, I kid, I kid!
Thanks for this one though, we never see these cars on other blogs.
nice one!
kindly share whats the colour code of the 180SX, please?
saw a blueish-purple there.
thanx~
The setups pretty awesome.. if your saying its the best looking, I disagree.. Can think of heaps of sexier 180’s, including your old one.
super cool nice guy too
and funny as well
car is cool. looks are whatever, but im sure he drives it amazing!
Damn, such a nice car. That colour is killer.
@BlueSlug
OK, I’ll give you that one. 🙂
@Shane
I reserve the right to be biased on my own website. 😛
@Paz & BH
Wakamatsu said his red car was “sleeping” at his workshop, so it might return at some point.
@Hawker180
I should have asked, but I forgot.
About the colour, I was using two different camera backs that day and forgot to change the colour profile on one of them, so the colours in all the photos were a little bit different. The colour looks a lot like the standard dark blue that the 180SX came out in, but the car has obviously been resprayed, judging by the white engine bay. I’ll ask next time I see him.
Does anyone know who makes the aero kit?
vertex ridge aero?
why do some people cut the top of the shroud like that???
Sorry for the revive, What headlights are they?
Hey Kakamatsu-san
greeting from Chile were you put a kick ass event!
Felipe (driver of the blue R32)
