What sort of reaction do you think you’d have when the 1000hp R35 GT-R you built did a 1’46.688 around Fuji Speedway while wearing the standard Dunlop run-flat tyres, then hit 325.7km/h on the front straight? Keep in mind that it’s just under a mile long (1.5km) and that F1 cars max out at 310km/h.

Here’s a couple of interesting little bits of memorabilia I’ve picked up so far in Japan.
This mousepad was made by Nissan to celebrate the original 7’38″54 GT-R time around the Nürburgring, which has of course since been bettered. It was only given out to the “Technology member” employes, who directly worked on the GT-R’s design and construction. I received this from a friend who worked at the Nissan Tochigi factory, where they make the GT-R. He gave it to me saying “I don’t use a mouse on my home computer. You like this sort of stuff, right?”

In the week following the Tokyo Auto Salon, I worked as a driver, translator and phone-call-making guy for the Autosalon magazine guys as they toured and reported on a bunch of workshops and aftermarket parts factories.
The one that stands out most to me was the final one we visited: Mine’s.

If you had to pick a car to represent Japanese motoring in the year 2008, it would have to be this clean, Volk-wearing R35 GT-R.
