Believe it or not, this is a drift car. Read on.
This crazy FD belongs to Hiroki “Niiyan” Awaji, a member of the Sexy Knights drift team, and owner of a panel shop in Chiba called Newtype. Despite the time-attack-style exterior, it’s not meant to set times or even be a competition car, rather just a personal drifter he can have fun with at track days. The livery used to have an Evangelion graphic theme, but switched a little while ago to virtual idol Hatsune Miku. You can see what it looked like back in 2011 in these pics.
In order to overcome the downforce from all those bits of plywood, Niiyan has been experimenting with this 650HP 2JZ with an HKS T51R turbo. It’s still not perfectly set up and throws out a few bugs every time it hits the track, such as fueling or turbo troubles, but it’s slowly becoming more and more reliable.

So why all that aero work? Niiyan says that it helps cancel out the ease in which an FD chassis will spin out, so he can just hold the throttle flat everywhere and not worry about it. With that said though, this particular event at Tsukuba Circuit was a time-attack session in the morning, and drift session in the afternoon. Niiyan said that when the next round is held, he intends to do both morning and afternoon sessions!
