WEEKEND EDITION: Tokyo Auto Salon 2009

If you were hoping for some sort of massive coverage of this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, prepare to be disappointed. There were already hundreds of other journalists at the event, walking around with big, expensive cameras, imagining they were the only people there from a foreign country, and giving you dirty looks when the sight of your round-eyed face spoiled their fantasy. Get over it guys, its Auto Salon. Everyone comes here.

Don’t disappoint them, go check out their coverage.

However, having a cameraphone handy meant at least a few snaps were taken. Prepare for some low-resolution goodness.

STEEL WHEELS: This season’s new fashion.

The whole “low offset, dished chrome” thing was never going to last. The latest thing to run on your car over here in Japan is narrow fifteen-inch steel wheels.

Of course, it’s winter right now, snow is falling in the mountains, and those wheels have Bridgestone Blizzak studless snow tyres on them.

You can probably guess the rest.

TOCHIGI BAKA MATSURI 2009: Part I

Located about 100km north of Tokyo, Tochigi Prefecture is generally known for it’s beautiful mountainside, gyoza, temples and ski resorts, but is also one of the major hubs of drifting activity on the Kanto plain.

This year’s Tochigi Baka Matsuri (Tochigi Idiot Festival) run by two of the biggest idiots in the prefecture, D1 drivers Hiroshi Fukuda and “Mr Tochigi” Yoshinori Koguchi, was as it suggested, a festival of much idiotic activity, which generally meant a whole lot of drifting was going on.

THAT SH*T WILL BUFF OUT: Silvia and Roadster t-bone crash at Okegawa Circuit

So here’s what happened.

A train of missile cars in an Expert Class session, led by D1 drivers Daigo Saito and Yukio Matsui, drifted into the first corner at Okegawa Circuit, a small go-kart-style track in Saitama Prefecture. The S13 driver, who was at the back of the group, came in a little bit too hot and was unable to see a stationary Mazda that had spun out just moments before. I’ll let the following pictures speak for themselves.
