HACHIROKU DAY AT NIKKO CIRCUIT: Part I

By in 17-08-2009 12:30 am

I was going to editorialise a bit here, but since it was going to be unrelated to AE86s, and because my column for the UK’s Banzai Magazine is due in a couple of days and I need to save up my opinion juice, I’ll save it for another post.

Until then, enjoy the first half of Noriyaro’s coverage of the 6th of August AE86 meeting at Nikko Circuit.

2009 SUMMER DRIFT MATSURI: Sunday

By in 12-08-2009 12:21 am

Good morning!

When people asked me where I was staying for the night, I told them “The Skyline Hotel”. Without fail, they’d stare at me for a couple of seconds and then break out in laughter.

The passenger’s seat in the R32 is still standard, so it was comfortable enough for at least a few hours sleep.

REAL: Himawari Racing at Fuji Speedway Drift Course, Part I

By in 04-06-2009 2:55 am

Last Saturday, I drifted at a Himawari Racing day at Fuji Speedway, or “Doripa” as everyone here refers to it. Himawari is a group of friends who live in Hachioji, a city to the south-west of Tokyo. The group’s leader is a guy called Kazuya who drifts a bright-pink AE86 Trueno coupe, and is in a triple-car team with Tomonori Akai and my housemate Shino Murai, called the “Hachiroku Hentai”. More on that another time.

The weather report had said it supposed to clear up for the afternoon, so rain in the morning was not unexpected. Here’s my other housemate Yoshio “Riichan” Takahashi and I negotiating the streets of Hachioji (cheaper than taking the toll roads) while I enjoy a tuna and mayo onigiri for breakfast.

YOU DRIFT LIKE A GIRL: Nikko Queen 2009

By in 20-04-2009 12:30 am

I’m not going to bother doing a big event report on this year’s Nikko Queen event, since a lot of the stuff I shot would be more fun as part of a few mini-features, so look forward to those.

Just to get the formalities out of the way though, here are the ladies who placed in the Expert Class competition!

First Place was Akari Nagasawa. It’s rare to see anyone drive Nikko Circuit’s first corner as neatly and consistently as she did all day. A quick flick in, stomp on the brakes to settle the car and full acceleration right out wide towards the judging stand with not a single bit of visible handbrake correction.

I have something new to try next time I drive at Nikko, I think…

Keep in mind, her boyfriend is D1 Street Legal driver Hideyuki Fujino, so you can imagine the sort of conversations that go on between those two.
