TYRE ABUSE: They die so that we may drift
September 21, 2009 1:16 amHere’s a couple of interesting tyre-related photos I pulled off my mobile phone. I really need to carry my proper camera around with me more often, but these pics are good enough for this post.
Good for another few laps at least, I reckon.
Here’s one that annoyed me a bit. A perfectly good Federal SS595, right?
Hang on, why is the sidewall filled with rubber powder?
A slow leak that opened up on an expressway drive dropped the pressure down and ran the tyre on its sidewall for about 150km. I didn’t really notice anything was wrong until I turned off the freeway, since there was still enough pressure in the tyre for it to feel normal. The alignment on the Skyline was all messed up anyway, so it didn’t make much of a difference!
This particular part of the sidewall opened up into one of those awesome golfball shapes that we all hate.
Here’s the crack I found after doing the soapy water test.
One good thing about shredded tyre residue though, it makes for a great facial hair substitute.
Thanks to Andy from the Powervehicles blog for this pic.
